Foundation to flight

By the time a child reaches Grade 3, they stand tall at the final pillar of their Foundation Phase journey. Having grown from the open curiosity of a circle in Grade R, to the strength of a triangle, the structure of a square, and the complexity of a hexagon in Grade 2—they now begin to embody that hexagon fully. With many sides and layers to who they are, a Grade 3 learner is a blend of resilience, curiosity, and emotional depth.

They’ve overcome many small but meaningful struggles—learning to navigate friendships, emotions, and academic challenges. They are more aware of themselves and the world around them, often deeply interested in people and attuned to differences. Busy, active, and full of energy, they may sometimes take on more than they can handle yet, these moments build resilience.

Their sensitivity grows too—they begin to recognize failure, feel criticism more deeply, and reflect on their experiences. Yet, with that comes a powerful leap in cognitive development. They are now capable of critical thinking, problem-solving, and engaging with more complex material. As they prepare to step beyond the Foundation Phase, Grade 3 learners are becoming independent thinkers—ready to take on the world with the solid shape and strength of a fully formed hexagon.
