Forming foundations: Strengthening the shape
A Grade 1 learner enters school having been shaped in Grade R—now more confident, curious, and with a growing understanding of the world around them. They begin the year like a triangle: strong, balanced, and ready to take on more. But as they move through Grade 1, they become more aware of themselves and others. They start forming deeper relationships, asking more questions, and even showing moments of vulnerability. With guidance, routine, and care, they develop greater emotional and academic structure. By the end of Grade 1, they begin to take the form of a square—solid, stable, and ready to build upon everything they’ve learned.
